This is American Tribal Style®
belly dance (also known as ATS®), as created by Carolena Nericcio, director of FatChanceBellyDance®.
Irene Reinke, the director of Barajagala is aFatChanceBellyDance® certified ATS® instructor.
Created in the 80's in San Francisco, by Carolena Nericcio - this American dance is a unique dance form which combines classic Egyptian bellydance and folkloric steps with a good dose of Flamenco stylizations. It is "tribal" in that it is a collaborative and improvisational dance between a group of dancers . It fosters feelings of liberation and unity, of sensuality and power. The flamenco aspect of this dance infuses the dancers with a feeling of power and elegance, the bellydance moves celebrate the artistic sensuality of women, and the tribal nature of ATS® bellydance encourages a sense of community. Even from the first class, women experience a sense of beauty and strength within themselves from participating in this unique dance form.

The Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine Street) hosts an open mike every third Friday of the month at 7:30pm, along with featured guests. Hosted by spoken word duo "Yellow Rage"**** (Michelle Myers and Catzie Vilaphonh), Asian Art Initiative invites the sharing of stories, song, dance, and poetry. Barajagala will be one of the guests at the March show. Come early for the pre-show reception starting at 6:45pm, with FREE food generously donated by local restaurants. General admission is $5-$10, sliding scale.
