Barajagala Tribal Belly Dance ...
This is not your mother's belly dance! This is American Tribal Style (ATS)
belly dance as created by
FatChanceBellyDance director,
Carolena Nericcio (for more info. on FatChanceBellyDance, click on www.fcbd.com). Begun in the 80's in San Francisco, this American
dance is a blend of classic Egyptian
belly dance and folkloric dance with
a good dose of Flamenco stylization.
It is "tribal" in that it focuses on the
group of dancers (rather than one soloist)
and it's costuming has a "tribal" look. One of it's distinguishing features is the
improvisational nature of the dance.
To the casual observer the dancing appears to be choreographed - however
in fact the dancing is improvised, creating not only fresh performances
for the audience, but an emotionally and physically exciting experience
for the dancers.
The steps and movements of this dance were developed to keep with the
philosophy of presenting women as powerful and beautiful, mysterious
and proud. All ages and all body types will find this sensuous dance form
both supportive and empowering, as well as a great core body workout.
Barajagala is a FatChanceBellyDance Sister Studio. Irene is a certified ATS (American Tribal Style) belly dance instructor who teaches in West Chester, Pa. and Media, Pa. She and her students perform throughout the Philadelphia area.
